why is she so lightskinned? i wish a link to the artist’s work was provided so i could see what else they make, who they are. it’s a nice rendering, form wise. but she looks hella light.
so funny. the further back you go, the darker her image is. anymore, sadly, i feel la virgen is another sugar skull pop culture toy, and everyone and their brother wants to get in on passing her around.
This trend makes me sad as well. I first understood how devastating cultural appropriation of her image was to me personally when I saw a young white woman with a tattoo of her image on her arm in a San Francisco elevator. I yelled at her, asked her why she felt entitled to that image when it was sacred to me and my people. As she cowered in a corner her face turned away from me, all she could say was sorry. I was still livid when I got off the elevator.
I reblogged this image even though it is lighter skinned than I like because it looks like an image my late grandmother had in her home and it reminded me of being there with her.
As a faithful follower de la Virgen Morena, I photograph any images I find of her. I have taken many photos of murals and statues. Though I understand where your coming from regarding her representation in this particular image you are failing to see the bigger message. I’m not photographing La Virgen as an art medium or for art’s sake. No, no. I photograph La Virgen as a reminder of the places she made herself available to me for prayer if needed. That’s the reason you are seeing this image. Please scroll down my feed and check out the other photos I’ve take. Check out my blog, www.razafotografista.WordPress.com for poems and more images. Thank you for the reblogs and likes!
